Where it comes from

The story of Mecca

Mecca was a caravan town with a sanctuary at its center long before Islam, and the pilgrimage that focuses on it now draws more people to one place at one time than any other event on earth. English took the name as a common noun for anything that attracts a crowd, which is how it entered the general vocabulary. As a given name it appears in American records from the nineteen-eighties, mostly in Black American families, and it is used for girls far more than for boys.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Not established. Makkah appears in the Qur'an and in pre-Islamic sources, and no Arabic etymology has been agreed; a South Arabian word for a sanctuary has been proposed. English acquired the common noun in the nineteenth century, meaning a place that draws people irresistibly.

Mecca sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 89 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It names a real place known to nearly everyone on earth.
  • Two syllables and five letters make it fast to write and easy to say.
  • The English common noun is a warm one: a place people are drawn to.
What to consider
  • It is a sacred city, and giving it as a name reads differently to Muslims than to others.
  • Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so a child looking it up will find guesses.
  • The English word is in everyday use, so the name appears in unrelated sentences.
