The story of Delfina
Delphine of Glandeves was a Provencal noblewoman of the fourteenth century who, with her husband, took a vow of chastity and gave away most of what they had; her cult made the name ordinary in southern France and, through Spanish and Italian, in the Catholic world. The French heir apparent was called the Dauphin, which is the same word again, from a family whose arms carried dolphins. Delfina was widely given in Argentina, Mexico and Italy.

dolphin; of Delphi
Latin Delphina, from delphis, a dolphin, or from Delphi. The two Greek words share a root that also gives the word for a womb, which ancient writers connected to the dolphin's shape. Which sense the name carries has never been separated.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ceola test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Delfina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ceola climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ceola's path sketches the road Delfina is walking now.
Delfina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Delfina is headed
Delfina should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- The meaning is an animal and a famous place at once, and both are easy to explain.
- Delfi and Fina are ready short forms with quite different registers.
- It works in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Polish households alike.
- Delfina and Delphina are both used, so records within a family may differ.
- English readers may say del-FY-nuh, which is a noticeably different sound.
- It sounds of an earlier generation in Spanish, which is heritage to some families and age to others.
