Delphina
Feminine · “of Delphi”
The dolphin and the oracle at Delphi share a word. Greek delphys is a womb, and a dolphin was the fish that had one — it bears live young, which the Greeks noticed. Delphi is built on the same root, and the Homeric hymn says Apollo arrived there in the shape of a dolphin, which may be the story explaining the word rather than the other way round.

The story of Delphina
Delphi was the center of the Greek world for a thousand years, and the oracle there answered questions in verse that was famously easy to misread. It was also, in Greek reckoning, the navel of the earth, marked by a stone. The word underneath all of it is the ordinary one for a womb, which is either a coincidence or is not: the site was sacred to an earth power before Apollo took it over, and the name may be older than he is. The Christian name arrived by a different route — a thirteenth-century Provencal noblewoman called Delphine — and traveled into French, Italian and Spanish, which is where the American entries come from.

of Delphi; dolphin
From Latin Delphina, from Greek Delphis or Delphoi, both built on delphys, a womb. The name can be read as of Delphi or as dolphin, and the two are the same root. The flower delphinium is named from the same word, for the shape of its bud.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ambrosia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Delphina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ambrosia climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ambrosia's path sketches the road Delphina is walking now.
Delphina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented Greek root with three visible descendants in English: Delphi, dolphin and delphinium.
- Three short forms, all of which are names in their own right.
- It is spelled almost identically in Italian, Spanish, Polish and French.
- Delfina and Delphine are both commoner, and the ph and f spellings will be mixed constantly.
- It is strongly represented among older generations and reads as of the earlier twentieth century.
- Three syllables and an unusual shape means it will be repeated more often than most.
