The story of Louetta
Chlodovech is the oldest recorded form and it belonged to the king who united the Franks and became Christian, which is why the name went on to every French royal house afterwards. Latin writers wrote it Chlodovechus, which gave Clovis; German kept the elements more visibly as Ludwig; French wore it down to Louis, dropping the final consonant entirely. The first element is a plain adjective — hlud, loud, which is the same word English still uses about noise — and it meant famous in the sense of being talked about. Lou, the American clip, then took the Italian -etta ending, which is how a Frankish battle-name ended up sounding like a Neapolitan diminutive.
Meaning
famous in battle
From Frankish Chlodovech: hlud, loud or famous, with wig, battle. Hlud is the same word as English loud. Louis is the French development, Ludwig the German, Luis the Spanish, and Clovis is the Latinized form of the earliest spelling. The -etta ending is an Italian diminutive attached in America.

The trade-off

- Three short forms, two of which are full names in their own right.
- It joins a French royal name to an Italian ending, which is unusual and entirely American.
- It is strongly represented among the very oldest generations and reads clearly as of that time.
- The syllable count is unsettled between three and four.
- Louetta, Luetta and Loretta are all in use and close enough to be confused.
