The story of Gracia
Gracia Nasi was born Beatriz de Luna in Lisbon, married into the family that financed European trade in spices, and after her husband's death spent twenty years moving money, ships and people. Jewish sources call her by her Hebrew household name, Gracia, and record that the network she ran saved a great many lives. She ended in Constantinople, where she was allowed to live openly as a Jew for the first time. The name itself is older and much plainer: Spanish and Portuguese families have used it for centuries as a Marian title and as a virtue name, and it has the peculiar quality of being a word its bearer hears used about other things all day long.
