Zoi
Feminine · “life”
Zoi is life, in one syllable of Greek and three letters. Greek has two words for life and this is the one that means life itself rather than a particular person's life; the New Testament uses it for the life that does not end, which is why the name is common across the Orthodox world.

The story of Zoi
The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible used Zoe to render Eve, whose Hebrew name is connected to living, and early Christian women took it up; a Roman martyr of the name kept it in the calendar. It has been ordinary in Greece ever since and reached western Europe in the nineteenth century. Zoi is the modern Greek transliteration, closer to how the name is said in Athens than the English Zoe, which was borrowed through Latin.
Meaning
life
Greek zoe, life, distinguished in Greek from bios, an individual life or a way of living. The distinction matters in Greek philosophy and theology, and the name carries the larger of the two words.

The Lalani test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zoi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lalani climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lalani's path sketches the road Zoi is walking now.
Zoi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is one word and one of the largest words there is.
- Three letters make it as short as a written name can be.
- It is the standard Greek spelling, which keeps a family line visible.
- Zoe is the standard English spelling and will be written instead constantly.
- The stress differs between Greek and English, so the name is said two ways.
- English readers may say ZOY, treating the oi as one sound.
