The story of Florentina
The Nightingale sisters are the best-known case but not an isolated one: nineteenth-century British families who could afford to winter in Italy produced children named Florence, Venetia and Rome, and the practice put Florence into general English use, where it became one of the commonest women's names of the late Victorian period. Parthenope, from the Greek name of Naples and of a siren, did not catch on. Florentina is the older Latin form, used in Spain, Italy and Romania, and it reached America with immigration from those countries rather than through the English fashion. The figures peak in 1905.
Meaning
Latin "flourishing"
From florens, blooming or flourishing, from flos, a flower. Florentina is the Latin feminine of Florentinus. The Italian city Firenze, Florence in English, is from the same root — the Roman colony was Florentia. Florence as an English given name is generally from the city rather than directly from the Latin adjective.
