The story of Jaye
English names birds with people's names more than any other European language: robin redbreast, magpie from Margaret, martin, jenny wren, jackdaw, and the Welsh-derived pied wagtail called Polly. The jay may belong to that set through Latin Gaius, though the imitative explanation is equally live. As a given name Jay was in American use throughout the twentieth century for both sexes; the silent-e spelling was one of the early-century devices for marking a woman's name, and the male row for Jaye is small and later, with a best year of 1959. It shows the device being used without its original signal.

Not established
The bird's name comes through Old French jai from Late Latin gaius, which may be the Roman personal name Gaius applied to the bird, or may be an imitation of its call. As a given name Jay is more often from the initial J, from a clip of James or Jason, or from the bird. The final e of this spelling is a silent marker and carries no meaning.

The Morrison test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaye's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Morrison climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Morrison's path sketches the road Jaye is walking now.
Jaye sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
