The story of Fabien
Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus was appointed dictator after Hannibal destroyed a Roman army at Lake Trasimene in 217 before the common era, and his strategy of shadowing the invader without engaging him was deeply unpopular until the alternative was tried at Cannae. The Fabian Society, founded in London in 1884, took his name deliberately for a policy of gradual reform. The name Fabianus produced saints and a third-century pope, and it passed into French as Fabien and Italian as Fabiano. Fabien reached United States records with French and Haitian families, with a best year of 1984.

of the Fabian family, from a name possibly meaning bean
Latin Fabianus, belonging to the gens Fabia. The clan name Fabius is traditionally connected to faba, a bean, which would place it with Cicero the chickpea and Lentulus the lentil among Rome's agricultural family names; that derivation is traditional rather than proven. The -ien ending is the French form of the Latin -ianus.

The Stefanos test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fabien's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stefanos climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stefanos's path sketches the road Fabien is walking now.
Fabien sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
