The story of Stefanos
Stephen was the first Christian martyr, stoned at Jerusalem while Saul of Tarsus watched, and his name — a Greek word for the victor's wreath — was read from the beginning as a play on his death. It became one of the great Christian names in every language: Étienne, Esteban, István, Stefan, Szczepan. Greek kept Stefanos unchanged, and it has been in continuous use for two thousand years. American records carry it with Greek immigration from the late nineteenth century, with a modest peak in the 1960s reflecting Greek-American families keeping the Greek form rather than settling for Steve.
Meaning
Crown, garland, wreath
From Greek stephanos, a wreath or crown, from stephein, to encircle or wreathe. The reading is settled. The word means the woven wreath of victory or of marriage rather than a royal crown, which is why Orthodox weddings are called crownings and the couple wear stefana.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Juvencio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Stefanos's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Juvencio climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Juvencio's path sketches the road Stefanos is walking now.
Stefanos sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off

- Steve is available instantly in English-speaking settings.
- It has an unbroken record of use since the first century.
- The final s makes it look like a surname to American eyes.
- Stefanos, Stephanos and Stefan are three spellings that will be confused.
- The stress is regularly misplaced by English speakers.
