The story of Laramie
La Ramée trapped along the river that now bears his name and vanished in the winter of about 1820, reportedly killed by Arapaho; his companions named the river for him. Fort Laramie became the great waypoint of the Oregon and Mormon trails and the site of the treaties of 1851 and 1868 with the Plains nations, and the town of Laramie grew up with the Union Pacific in 1868. Wyoming's territorial legislature, sitting at Laramie, gave women the vote in 1869, the first in the world to do so. The name's American use as a given name is small and modern, peaking in 1985, and the television series Laramie ran from 1959 to 1963.
Meaning
From the surname La Ramée
The name descends from Jacques La Ramée, a fur trapper of French-Canadian origin who worked the region in the 1810s. La Ramée is a French surname and a soldier's nickname, from rameau, a branch or bough. The chain from the man to the river to the fort to the town is well documented; the personal name's own meaning is the branch.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Laramie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Geoffry climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Geoffry's path sketches the road Laramie is walking now.
