Riddick
Masculine · “The reed ditch”
Riddick is an English surname turned first name, and its American history has two clear moments. A heavyweight champion carried it in the early 1990s and a science-fiction antihero carried it from 2000, and the name's peak in 2016 belongs to the second rather than the first.

The story of Riddick
The surname is recorded in England from the Middle Ages and traveled to America early, becoming established in Virginia and North Carolina in particular. Riddick Bowe, the Brooklyn heavyweight who beat Evander Holyfield in 1992, was named for it. The given name's American record is nonetheless later and larger: it appears in quantity only after 2000, when the film Pitch Black introduced a character called Richard B. Riddick, and rises through the sequels of 2004 and 2013 to a peak in 2016. That is an unusual pattern — the name follows the fictional bearer rather than the real one.

The reed ditch, or the red oak
The surname is English and its derivation is not settled. A place name from Old English hrēod, reed, and dīc, a ditch, is one proposal; a form of Reddick or Redick from rēad āc, red oak, is another; and an origin in the Norse personal name Hrothrekr, the same name as Roderick, is a third. All three are offered by surname dictionaries and none is established.

The Jeston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Riddick's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jeston climbed just as high around 1984, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jeston's path sketches the road Riddick is walking now.
Riddick sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
