Where it comes from

Our story of Rayvon

Rhyme sets have a shape in the data that is easy to recognize once you have seen a few: they appear suddenly, spread across every available prefix within about five years, hold for fifteen, and then vanish almost completely. The -von set is a clean example. Devon existed first as an English place name, and once that sound was established the ending detached: Davon, Javon, Trevon, Rayvon, Lavon, Kevon. All of them enter the American records within a decade of each other, all of them peak in the 1990s, and by 2010 essentially none of them is in the top thousand. Rayvon's peak in 1994 sits right at the center of that arc, and its front half — Ray — is the only part of it with a documented past.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology. Ray is a short form of Raymond, from Germanic ragin, counsel, and mund, protection — settled for Raymond. The -von ending has no traceable source: it appears in American records in the 1970s and spreads across De-, Ja-, Tre-, Ray- and Le- without any of the pieces descending from an older word. Armenian Levon, from Leon, is a genuine separate name that is not the source of the American family.
