Delwyn
Masculine · “pretty and fair”
Welsh marks sex at the end of a name and does it consistently. Gwyn is white or blessed and goes to men; gwen is the same word in its feminine form and goes to women. So Delwyn and Delwen are the same name twice, and a Welsh speaker knows which is which at a glance.

The story of Delwyn
The gwyn and gwen pair runs through the whole Welsh name stock: Alwyn and Alwen, Berwyn and Berwen, Delwyn and Delwen, Eurwyn and Eurwen, and the standalone Gwyn and Gwen. It is a genuine grammatical distinction — Welsh adjectives change their vowel in the feminine — rather than a convention, which makes it more reliable than anything English has. A good many of the names using it are recent. The nineteenth-century Welsh cultural revival, with the eisteddfod at its center, produced a large number of new names built from real Welsh elements, and they are now indistinguishable from ancient ones unless you go looking.
Meaning
pretty and fair
Welsh del, pretty or neat, with gwyn, white, fair or blessed. The feminine form is Delwen, with the vowel changed. Gwyn is one of the most productive endings in Welsh naming and its feminine counterpart is equally so.

Two syllables, stress on the first. Welsh stresses the second-to-last syllable of every word, which for a two-syllable name means the first, so English and Welsh agree here.

The Ralston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Delwyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ralston climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ralston's path sketches the road Delwyn is walking now.
Delwyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Both elements are ordinary Welsh words with settled meanings.
- The ending marks the name clearly as a man's in Welsh, which few names do.
- Two syllables that English speakers read correctly on sight.
- Outside Wales the gwyn and gwen distinction is invisible and the name will be read as either.
- Delwyn, Dellwyn and Delwin are all recorded, so the spelling will be given.
- It is strongly represented among older generations and reads clearly as of that time.
