Ralston

The story of Ralston
Webster Edgerly, writing as Edmund Shaftesbury, founded the Ralston Health Club in the 1890s, a movement built on diet, posture and self-improvement and promoted through a large mail-order literature. Its followers were numbered in the hundreds of thousands at its height. When a Missouri miller wanted an endorsement for his whole-wheat cereal he obtained the Ralston name, and the company that became Ralston Purina carried it into the twentieth century. The given name's small American peak in the 1910s sits inside that window of visibility, when Ralston meant a program of healthy living to a mass audience rather than a place in Scotland. It is an unusual chain even by American standards: a Scottish farm to a Victorian self-help movement to a cereal box to a birth certificate.
Meaning
Old English, Ralph's farmstead
