The story of Soloman
Solomon built the Temple, judged between two women claiming one child, and acquired a reputation for wisdom that spread far beyond the Hebrew Bible — the Qur'an has Sulayman commanding the wind and the jinn, and medieval Europe made him a magician. The name was ordinary among Jews throughout the diaspora and was taken up by English Puritans, and it was a common American name in the nineteenth century among both Jewish and Christian families. Soloman appears as a variant spelling in the same period, peaking in 1881 at the height of Solomon's own American use; both have been rare since 1930.

From Hebrew Šĕlōmōh, from šālôm, peace or wholeness. The reading is settled and undisputed. The -man ending of this spelling is an American variant with no separate meaning; the standard Solomon ends in a reduced vowel that English speakers hear as either -on or -an.
