The story of Demetrio
Demetrius of Thessalonica, a Christian killed under Diocletian, became one of the great warrior saints of the Eastern church, and his cult spread west as well as east. Demetrios and Dimitri are ordinary in Greece, Russia, Serbia and Bulgaria, and Italy and Spain took Demetrio, which was used steadily though never commonly. American records show it with Italian and Hispanic immigration through the twentieth century, with a peak in 1908 that belongs to the great Italian migration, and steady low use since among Spanish-speaking families. In Mexico and the Philippines it has been used continuously.
Meaning
Of Demeter, devoted to Demeter
From Greek Dēmētrios, belonging to Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. The goddess's own name is usually read as earth mother, from mētēr, mother, with a first element connected to earth that is not securely established. The derivation of the personal name from the goddess is not in dispute; the Italian and Spanish forms drop the Greek -s ending.
