Where it comes from

The story of Geoffry

Two Germanic names came into Norman French and then into England, and they arrived so close together that nobody could keep them apart. One had a first element that scholars still argue about — the candidates include a word for a district, one for a traveler and one for a pledge. The other began with the word for god and produced Godfrey. In medieval documents the same man appears as Gaufridus, Galfridus, Godefridus and Jofroi in different entries, and by the fourteenth century English simply had two names that were sometimes the same name. Modern dictionaries hedge the first element and note the confusion, which is the honest position: the peace half is solid and the front half has three competing readings and a rival name mixed into it.

peace, joined to something disputed

The second element is the Germanic word for peace and is not in doubt. The first is: territory, traveler, pledge and a form of the word for god have all been proposed, and medieval records show the name merging with Godfrey, which has a clearer first element. Clerks wrote the two interchangeably.

Fashion outlook

Geoffry sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Geoff comes off it at once and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • The peace element behind it is genuinely documented.
What to consider
  • Geoffrey and Jeffrey are both far commoner and will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every time, because the sound gives no clue to it.
  • The first element is contested, so the meaning comes with a qualification.
