The story of Eston
The four directional -ton names are the plainest in the English landscape: a farm east of somewhere else, named from the point of view of the somewhere else. Easton and Eston both descend from them, and the surname followed. In American use the name carries a specific weight through Eston Hemings, who was freed under Jefferson's will in 1826, worked as a musician in Ohio, moved to Wisconsin in 1852 and changed his surname; his descendants lived as white. The story was contested for two centuries and settled by genetic evidence in 1998. Eston's best year in United States records is 1900.
Meaning
east farmstead
From Old English east and tun, an enclosure or farmstead, giving the eastern farm. The same construction produces Weston, Norton and Sutton, which are the west, north and south farms; the four are among the commonest English place names because every settlement had neighbors in four directions.
