Corinne
Feminine · “maiden”
Corinne is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 49,877 girls against 15 boys since 1880.
Corinne is the French turn of an old Greek name, and the French gave it that light landing on the second syllable that English kept. It arrived in English-speaking use with Madame de Staël's novel *Corinne, ou l'Italie* in 1807, and it has been on American records for as long as those records have existed — never crowding a classroom, never disappearing either.

The story of Corinne
The oldest form is the Greek Korinna, carried by a lyric poet of Boeotia whose fragments survive from antiquity. Latin took it as Corinna, and Roman poetry made it a name for the beloved — Ovid's *Amores* addresses a Corinna throughout, and English poets borrowed the habit, notably in Robert Herrick's "Corinna's Going A-Maying" in the seventeenth century. French smoothed Corinna into Corinne, and Madame de Staël's 1807 novel of that title sent the French spelling across Europe and into English. It reached American birth records at the very start of national record-keeping and has stayed on them without a break since.

Stress falls on the second syllable in American English. Some families say KOR-in, and the French pronunciation is closer to kaw-REEN — all three are heard, so it is worth deciding early which one you mean.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Corinne went to 253 girls in 2025, but Corrine and Korinne are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 304, which makes it the 667th most-given girls’ name of the year — 332 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 5,287 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 6,353 for Corinne itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- On US birth records continuously since national record-keeping began, without ever becoming a crowded name.
- Recognizable across French, German, Italian, Spanish and Romanian in barely altered forms.
- Comes with ready-made short forms — Cori, Corrie, Cora — that already work as names in their own right.
- Two syllables with the weight at the end, which sits easily against both short and long surnames.
- The spelling gets shuffled constantly: Corinne, Corrine, Corine and Corinna are all in use, so expect to spell it out and to correct the occasional double-R.
- Stress is genuinely unsettled between kuh-RIN and KOR-in, and a French-leaning kaw-REEN adds a third. Pick one and repeat it; people will follow.
- Most Corinnes in the US today are grown adults rather than children, so the name may register as a generation older than your baby for a while.
