Where it comes from

The story of Simone

Eunice Waymon, a classically trained pianist playing bars in Atlantic City, took a stage name so her churchgoing mother would not find out: Nina, a pet name, and Simone after the French actress Simone Signoret. As Nina Simone she became one of the great voices of the century. Another Simone, the philosopher Simone Weil, left teaching to work on the assembly lines of a Paris car factory so that she could understand the lives of workers from the inside. The name is recorded for a very few boys, but it is a woman's name everywhere.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Simone went to 254 girls in 2025, but Symone is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 288, which makes it the 679th most-given girls’ name of the year — 316 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,581 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 6,328 for Simone itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
