Where it comes from

The story of Lisbeth

Elisheba was the wife of Aaron, and Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist, which put the name into Christian use everywhere. Germany and Scandinavia clipped it early and hard: Lisbeth, Lisbet, Liesbeth, Elsbeth and Lise all became independent names. American records show Lisbeth thinly through the twentieth century, mostly in families of German and Scandinavian descent, and its modest peak in the early 2000s comes before Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander reached English readers in 2008 — the novel changed the name's associations sharply but arrived after its American high point.

Meaning

My God is an oath

From Hebrew ʾĔlîšebaʿ, from ʾēl, God, and a second element read either as šebaʿ, oath, or as sābaʿ, abundance. The oath reading is the usual one and the ambiguity is old. Lisbeth carries the meaning of the full name; the shortening itself adds nothing.

Lisbeth sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 344 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lisbeth went to 24 girls in 2025, but Lizbeth is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 195, which makes it the 765th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,473 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 8,242 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 66,969 for Lisbeth itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Darline test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lisbeth's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Darline climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Darline's path sketches the road Lisbeth is walking now.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a short, finished form of one of the most established names in Europe.
  • Lis and Beth are both instantly usable.
  • The meaning is well documented and easy to explain.
What to consider
  • Lisbeth Salander is now the dominant association in English-speaking countries.
  • Lisbeth, Lisbet, Liesbeth and Elisabeth will be written for each other.
  • It reads as a shortened form to Americans, who will ask if it is Elizabeth.
