The story of Venice
Refugees from the mainland took to the lagoon islands as the Roman order broke down, and the settlement that grew there became a maritime republic that lasted a thousand years, until Napoleon ended it in 1797. By the nineteenth century Venice was the destination of the Grand Tour and a byword for beauty and decay in English writing, from Byron and Ruskin to Henry James. American families used it as a girl's name from the 1890s, and its peak in the early 1920s sits with the other Italian place names of the period. Abbot Kinney's Venice of America, dug in Los Angeles in 1905, kept the word in front of Americans who would never see the original.

Of the Veneti
The city takes its name from the Veneti, an Italic people of the northeastern Adriatic recorded well before Rome expanded there. The tribal name itself has no settled etymology; connections to an Indo-European root meaning beloved or kin have been proposed and are not established. What is certain is the chain from tribe to region to city; what is not is what the tribe's name meant.

The Maple test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Venice's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maple climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maple's path sketches the road Venice is walking now.
Venice sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
