Where it comes from

The story of Erma

Old Germanic names were built from two elements, and when a first element was as common as irmin, families eventually stopped bothering with the second: Ermentrude and Irmgard were shortened to Irma, and Irma was respelled Erma in English-speaking countries. Both spellings crossed to America with German emigration in the nineteenth century, and Erma rose steadily to a peak in the second decade of the twentieth.

Meaning

whole, universal

From the Germanic irmin, 'whole', 'great' or 'universal', which appears as the first element in a family of names — Irmgard, Irmtraud, Ermentrude. Erma and Irma are short forms of that group, keeping the element and dropping whatever followed it.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Germanic element with a genuinely unusual piece of history behind it.
  • Two firm syllables, easy to say and impossible to mispronounce.
  • Irma is the same name in German, Italian and Hungarian, so it travels.
What to consider
  • Erma and Irma are both established spellings with identical sound.
  • It is period-coded to the early twentieth century in American ears.
