The story of Dagny
Dagný is recorded in Old Norse sources and stayed in use in Norway, Iceland and Sweden without interruption. Norwegian emigration to the American upper Midwest between 1860 and 1910 brought it to Minnesota, the Dakotas and Wisconsin, and the American peak in 1901 sits at the height of that migration. Ibsen used the name in The Vikings at Helgeland, and Dagny Juel, the Norwegian writer at the center of the Berlin bohemian circle around Munch and Strindberg, was killed in Tbilisi in 1901. Ayn Rand's Dagny Taggart, the railway executive of Atlas Shrugged, gave the name an entirely separate American afterlife from 1957 onward.
Meaning
New day
From Old Norse Dagný, from dagr, day, and ný, new. The reading is settled and both elements are transparent. The same dagr appears in Dagmar, Dagfinn and Dagrun, and it is the ordinary Norse word behind English day.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, concrete and genuinely lovely.
- Both elements are transparent Old Norse words that need no gloss.
- Two syllables and five letters travel easily.
- Ayn Rand's heroine is a strong association for a certain kind of reader.
- Outside Scandinavian-American families it is unfamiliar and will be spelled out.
- The hard opening consonant cluster is blunt where many contemporary girls' names are soft.
