The story of Robyn
The habit of giving birds human names is well documented in early modern English and it is unusually widespread. The magpie was a pie, and Mag, short for Margaret, was added. The jackdaw was a daw, and Jack was added. The wren was joined by Jenny, the tomtit by Tom, and the redbreast by Robin. Nobody is certain why English did this so freely, but the birds involved are all common, tame around houses, and conspicuous, which suggests familiarity rather than folklore. The robin in particular became a household bird in England precisely because it follows gardeners. The consequence for naming is that Robin now points at a bird for most English speakers, and a name that spent four hundred years as a male diminutive of Robert was pulled toward the female by the -in ending and then pushed further by the -yn respelling.

Robin is a Norman French diminutive of Robert, from the Germanic hrod, fame, and beraht, bright. The bird acquired the name in the fifteenth or sixteenth century, when English speakers began attaching human names to familiar birds; it had previously been called simply the redbreast. Robyn is a respelling with y, now given overwhelmingly to girls, and the male peak of 1962 is a late survival.
