The story of Elbert
Adalbert was a Frankish and Saxon name carried by saints and emperors, and every language it entered wore it down differently: Albert in English and French, Albrecht in German, Aalbert and Elbert in Dutch. Dutch settlement in New York and New Jersey brought Elbert to America in the seventeenth century, and it persisted in those families for generations, standing in the American top hundred and thirty-five for boys in the 1880s.
Meaning
noble and bright
From the Germanic athal, 'noble', and beraht, 'bright', through Adalbert. The beraht element is one of the most productive in old Germanic naming, giving Albert, Herbert, Robert and Bertha alike, and the compound is transparent and undisputed.
