In Old English lind meant both a lime tree and a shield, because shields were made of its wood. Poetry calls a warrior a lind-bearer. The tree's soft, light timber took a blow without splitting, and its inner bark made rope. A name element that now sounds ornamental was once a piece of military equipment.

Where it comes from

The story of Lindon

The lime tree was one of the most useful in northern Europe and almost none of its uses are obvious now. Its bast, the fibrous inner bark, was soaked and stripped to make rope and matting; the Russian word for the tree gives the name of a whole class of woven bast shoes. Its wood is soft, even-grained and does not split easily along a blow, which made it the standard shield material across Germanic Europe, and its blossom makes a honey and a tisane still sold everywhere. Its avenues line the great streets of central and eastern Europe, Unter den Linden among them. All of that stands behind a name element that English speakers now hear as simply pleasant. The women's names built on it, Linda and Rosalind, are literally shield names, in the same class as Hilda and Matilda.

Meaning

Old English lind, the lime or linden tree

From Old English lind, the linden or lime tree, Tilia, and by extension a shield made of its wood, with tun, an enclosed settlement, giving the place name and surname Linden or Lyndon. The same lind element appears in the Germanic names Linda, Rosalind, Belinda and Gerlinde, where it carries the shield sense. Lindon peaks as an American given name in 1941.

About 1 boy in 23,082 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 189,786 for Lindon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
