Where it comes from

The story of Lyndon

Lyndon was an English place name and surname that crossed into American given-name use in the nineteenth century. Lyndon B. Johnson was named for a family friend, became president on Kennedy's death, and signed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. American use of the name spiked sharply in 1964 and 1965 and fell away after 1968.

Meaning

hill with lime trees

From the Old English lind, 'lime tree' or 'linden', and dun, 'hill'. Lyndon in Rutland preserves it. The linden was valued for its shade and its wood, and the element appears widely in English place names. The compound is transparent and undisputed.

Lyndon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1964, with 515 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lyndon went to 65 boys in 2025, but Lindon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 74, which makes it the 854th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,329 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 23,082 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 26,278 for Lyndon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
