Where it comes from

Our story of Carsen

Our story of Carsen is a story of a surname whose reason was lost. Carson appears in southwest Scotland by the fourteenth century and the etymologists have argued ever since — a place, a Norman family, a son of Carr. It crossed to America, where Kit Carson made it famous and Carson City took it. American families began using it as a given name in the twentieth century, and Carsen is a modern respelling. The surname is old; its meaning is not recoverable.

Not established

The Carson surname's origin is not established. Proposals include a Scottish place name, a form of the Norman Curzon, and a patronymic from Carr. None is settled, and the American given name descends from the surname rather than from any word.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Carsen went to 65 boys in 2025, but Karsen is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 146, which makes it the 782nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,401 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 11,699 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 26,278 for Carsen itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
