Trinity
Masculine · “Latin trinitas”
Trinity is given to both — 2,844 boys and 85,348 girls since 1880. See Trinity as a girl nameSee other names given to both
The word Trinity is not in the Bible. Tertullian appears to have coined the Latin trinitas around the year 200 to name a doctrine that the scriptures describe without labeling, and every European language's word for it descends from that coinage. A theological term had to be invented before the thing could be argued about.

The story of Trinity
The male use of Trinity in the United States is older than the female one and comes chiefly through Spanish. Trinidad is a devotional name in the Spanish-speaking world, given to children born near Trinity Sunday, and it is grammatically feminine but used for both sexes, in the same way Guadalupe is. The island of Trinidad was named by Columbus for the feast. The English form Trinity appears in American records for boys from the nineteenth century, peaks in 1975, and is overtaken by female use in the 1990s, which is the usual direction of travel. A 1999 film gave the female form a substantial push and fixed the modern association. The doctrine the word names took three centuries to formulate and the councils that settled it were fought over for three more, which is a long argument for a word that had to be made up first.
Meaning
Latin trinitas, threeness
From Latin trinitas, from trinus, threefold, formed on tres, three. Tertullian, writing in North Africa around 200, is the earliest known user of the word in its theological sense, and the Greek equivalent trias appears at about the same date in Theophilus of Antioch. The Spanish Trinidad is used for men and women alike, which is where much of the American male use comes from. It peaks for boys in 1975.

The Rolf test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Trinity's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rolf climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rolf's path sketches the road Trinity is walking now.
Trinity sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
