The story of Maury
The Magdeburg Maurice, carved around 1240, is remarkable in its period: a life-size sandstone figure in full mail with unmistakably African features, treated with complete seriousness as a warrior saint. It was made for a cathedral that claimed his relics and it stood at a time when the Holy Roman Emperors were using the saint as an imperial patron. Images of Maurice as Black recur across German art for the following three centuries, particularly in Saxony and Bohemia, and then largely stop. The name itself spread widely, giving the French Maurice, Italian Maurizio, Spanish Mauricio and English Morris, and it produced a great many place names in the Alps where the legend located the martyrdom. Maury, the American short form, belongs to the nineteenth century and peaks in 1889.
