The story of Ashford
A ford was infrastructure, and controlling one meant controlling trade. The Roman road system used fords where it could and bridges where it had to, and Anglo-Saxon settlement followed the crossings, which is why so many English county towns sit at one. Once bridges were built the fords stopped mattering, but the names had already fixed.
