Aaren
Masculine

Aaron is not a Hebrew name. Its meaning has never been established from Hebrew, and it belongs to a group of Levite names, alongside Moses, Phinehas, Hophni and Merari, that appear to be Egyptian. Scholars have taken that as one of the more interesting pieces of evidence in the argument about Israel's origins.

The story of Aaren
The Egyptian names in the Levite lists are a genuinely striking detail and both sides of the historical argument use them. If the exodus narrative were invented late by people with no Egyptian connection, the presence of authentic Egyptian names in exactly the family the story concerns would be hard to explain, since a later writer would have had no reason to supply them and no obvious means of doing so. If the narrative preserves older material, the names are what one would expect. Moses is the clearest case: the element mose is a standard component of Egyptian royal names meaning born of a god, and the Hebrew explanation offered in Exodus, that he was drawn out of the water, is a pun on a Hebrew verb rather than an etymology. Aaron's name resists explanation in either language, which is where the matter still stands.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name of Moses's brother and the first high priest has no accepted Hebrew etymology. Proposed derivations, mountain of strength, enlightened, exalted, are folk explanations without support. The name is generally held to be Egyptian, as are several other names in the Levite genealogies, including Moses, which is the Egyptian element mose, born of, that also ends Thutmose and Ramose. Aaren is an American respelling of Aaron. It peaks in 1998.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
