Trinity
Feminine · “the Trinity”
Trinity is given to both — 85,348 girls and 2,844 boys since 1880. See Trinity as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Trinity comes from the Latin trinitas, a word coined by early Latin-writing Christians for the three-in-one God, and it has been attached to churches, colleges, rivers and islands ever since. It arrived in English as a devotional name, and it says itself the way it looks — three quick syllables, no ambiguity about spelling. Few names carry a whole doctrine and still fit on a name tag.

The story of Trinity
The Latin trinitas was made by early Christian theologians writing in North Africa to name the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one, and the Church later gave the Sunday after Pentecost to it. The word spread through place names before it was ever a child's name: Columbus named the island of Trinidad for the Trinity in 1498, and Trinity colleges, churches and streets followed across the English-speaking world. English speakers began using it as a given name in the devotional manner, while Spanish-speaking families had long given Trinidad to daughters for the same reason. It reached a wider audience again at the end of the 1990s through the character Trinity in The Matrix.

The Sherry test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Trinity's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sherry climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sherry's path sketches the road Trinity is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled and pronounced from sight by anyone who knows the English word — no corrections, no repeating it over the phone.
- Has stayed on the US charts continuously for a full century, through several changes of fashion.
- Has real short forms already in use: Trin and Trini.
- Crosses into Spanish, Catalan and French naming traditions through Trinidad, Trinitat and Trinité.
- Common enough to be instantly recognized, uncommon enough now that a classroom is unlikely to hold two.
- The meaning is a specific Christian doctrine, not a general virtue. Some families want exactly that; others find it states more about belief than they intend, and it can read as pointed either way.
- It was heavily used in the years around and after The Matrix, so it currently reads to many ears as belonging to young adults rather than to babies — a phase most names pass through before settling.
- It is shared with a great many churches, colleges, streets and a Caribbean nation, which means plenty of harmless namesakes but few surprises when someone searches for it.
- Usage runs strongest in Texas, California and Florida, so how familiar it feels can depend a good deal on where you are.
