The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Taylor
tailor — one who cuts cloth
From Old French tailleur, from Latin taliare, 'to cut'.
taliare (Latin) → tailleur (Old French) → taillour / Taylor (Middle English surname) → Taylor (given name)
How it traveled
Taylor is one of the great English occupational surnames, recorded from the medieval period onward for the tailor — the cutter of cloth — and it comes through Old French tailleur from the Latin verb taliare, 'to cut'. Like Riley, Parker and Harper, it made the ordinary English journey from trade to family name to given name, a pattern that has fed first names steadily for generations.
Trinity
the Trinity; threefold, a group of three
From Latin trinitas, built on trinus, 'threefold'.
Trinitas → Trinité → Trinity
How it traveled
The Latin trinitas was made by early Christian theologians writing in North Africa to name the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one, and the Church later gave the Sunday after Pentecost to it. The word spread through place names before it was ever a child's name: Columbus named the island of Trinidad for the Trinity in 1498, and Trinity colleges, churches and streets followed across the English-speaking world.

Out loud, and in short
Taylor
TAY-lur
Stress on the first syllable. One pronunciation everywhere in English; the only real variation is how fully the final -er is sounded.
- Tay — The standard informal short form for either sex; also used on its own in casual writing.
- Tay-Tay — Playful, family-and-friends register; used mostly for girls.
- T — Initial-only nickname, common among schoolmates and teammates.
Trinity
TRIN-i-tee
Stress on the first syllable. The spelling matches the ordinary English word, so almost no one needs it repeated.
- Trin — The everyday short form, informal and used by family and friends.
- Trini — Informal; also long-established as the short form of Spanish Trinidad, so it travels well in bilingual families.
- Trinny — A softer spelling of the same short form, more often seen in British usage.

The trade-offs, name by name
Taylor
Strengths
- Spelling and pronunciation are already known to everyone in English — no repeating, no correcting on the phone.
- Works for a boy or a girl with no change of form, and reads the same on a class list either way.
- A documented word history going back through Old French to Latin, unbroken and easy to explain to a child.
To consider
- The girls' side is much the larger one now, so a boy named Taylor will meet the occasional assumption on paper before people meet him. It is easily corrected, and the boys' use is genuinely older than the girls'.
- There are a great many adult Taylors, clustered in one broad generation — the name may read to some ears as belonging to grown-ups rather than to children, though that has ceased to be true of new classrooms.
- Tayler and Taylah exist as spellings, so the occasional form will come back needing a fix.
Trinity
Strengths
- Spelled and pronounced from sight by anyone who knows the English word — no corrections, no repeating it over the phone.
- Has stayed on the US charts continuously for a full century, through several changes of fashion.
- Has real short forms already in use: Trin and Trini.
To consider
- The meaning is a specific Christian doctrine, not a general virtue. Some families want exactly that; others find it states more about belief than they intend, and it can read as pointed either way.
- It was heavily used in the years around and after The Matrix, so it currently reads to many ears as belonging to young adults rather than to babies — a phase most names pass through before settling.
- It is shared with a great many churches, colleges, streets and a Caribbean nation, which means plenty of harmless namesakes but few surprises when someone searches for it.
