The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Leona
Lioness; feminine of Leo, 'lion'
From Greek leōn and Latin leo, leonis, 'lion'. Leona is built on the Latin oblique stem that also gives Leon and Leonard.
leōn (Greek) → Leo → Leon → Leona
How it traveled
The root is the Greek word leōn, 'lion', which Latin took as leo, with the stem leon- showing up in every other case of the noun. That stem produced Leon as a given name across the Greek-speaking Christian world and, later, all of Latin Europe, where a long line of popes and Byzantine emperors carried Leo.
Trinity
the Trinity; threefold, a group of three
From Latin trinitas, built on trinus, 'threefold'.
Trinitas → Trinité → Trinity
How it traveled
The Latin trinitas was made by early Christian theologians writing in North Africa to name the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one, and the Church later gave the Sunday after Pentecost to it. The word spread through place names before it was ever a child's name: Columbus named the island of Trinidad for the Trinity in 1498, and Trinity colleges, churches and streets followed across the English-speaking world.

Out loud, and in short
Leona
lee-OH-nuh
Stress falls on the middle syllable in English. Czech, Spanish and Polish speakers say lay-OH-na, with a cleaner first vowel.
- Lee — The oldest and plainest short form; also stands alone as a given name for women and men alike.
- Leo — The masculine name contained in Leona, used informally within families; also a boys' given name in strong current use.
- Nona — Clipped from the end rather than the front; informal, mostly a household name.
- Lonnie — Informal, associated with American usage in the mid-twentieth century; also independent as a given name.
- Also Ona.
Trinity
TRIN-i-tee
Stress on the first syllable. The spelling matches the ordinary English word, so almost no one needs it repeated.
- Trin — The everyday short form, informal and used by family and friends.
- Trini — Informal; also long-established as the short form of Spanish Trinidad, so it travels well in bilingual families.
- Trinny — A softer spelling of the same short form, more often seen in British usage.

The trade-offs, name by name
Leona
Strengths
- The meaning is settled and transparent — anyone who knows Leo can work out Leona, in almost any European language.
- Spells itself from the sound. Heard once, it is usually written correctly the first time.
- Short forms already exist and have for generations: Lee, Leo, Nona.
To consider
- Most living Leonas belong to the oldest generations, so some listeners will place it firmly in the past rather than the present. That gap is exactly what makes a name available again, but it is worth knowing before you say it aloud to relatives.
- It can be misheard as Leanna, Leonna or Fiona, and some people will put the stress on the first syllable. A single repetition usually fixes it.
- With Leo currently so visible for boys, Leona is often heard as 'the girls' version of Leo' rather than as its own name — fine if you like the pairing, less so if you wanted distance from it.
Trinity
Strengths
- Spelled and pronounced from sight by anyone who knows the English word — no corrections, no repeating it over the phone.
- Has stayed on the US charts continuously for a full century, through several changes of fashion.
- Has real short forms already in use: Trin and Trini.
To consider
- The meaning is a specific Christian doctrine, not a general virtue. Some families want exactly that; others find it states more about belief than they intend, and it can read as pointed either way.
- It was heavily used in the years around and after The Matrix, so it currently reads to many ears as belonging to young adults rather than to babies — a phase most names pass through before settling.
- It is shared with a great many churches, colleges, streets and a Caribbean nation, which means plenty of harmless namesakes but few surprises when someone searches for it.
