Where each name comes from
Trinity
the Trinity; threefold, a group of three
From Latin trinitas, built on trinus, 'threefold'.
Trinitas → Trinité → Trinity
How it traveled
The Latin trinitas was made by early Christian theologians writing in North Africa to name the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one, and the Church later gave the Sunday after Pentecost to it. The word spread through place names before it was ever a child's name: Columbus named the island of Trinidad for the Trinity in 1498, and Trinity colleges, churches and streets followed across the English-speaking world.
Veronica
True image
The usual reading joins the Latin vera to the Greek eikon. A rival account makes it the Latin form of Berenice, a Macedonian name about bringing victory. Names that mix two languages in one compound are ordinarily later constructions, which is the strongest argument against the first reading and in favor of the second.
Berenice → Veronica
How it traveled
An actress who shared the name wore her hair falling over one eye, and the style was copied widely enough that during the war the government asked her to change it: women were losing hair and fingers to factory machinery, and the studio put out photographs of her with it pinned up to make the point. She complied, her films did less well afterward, and she said later that the change had cost her the career.

Out loud, and in short
Trinity
TRIN-i-tee
Stress on the first syllable. The spelling matches the ordinary English word, so almost no one needs it repeated.
- Trin — The everyday short form, informal and used by family and friends.
- Trini — Informal; also long-established as the short form of Spanish Trinidad, so it travels well in bilingual families.
- Trinny — A softer spelling of the same short form, more often seen in British usage.
Veronica
vuh-RON-ih-kuh
Four syllables with the stress on the second. Every European language says it close to this.
- Ronnie — Cut from the middle, and used for either sex.
- Vera — The front alone, and a complete name in its own right.
- Nica — The back half, said NEE-kuh.

The trade-offs, name by name
Trinity
Strengths
- Spelled and pronounced from sight by anyone who knows the English word — no corrections, no repeating it over the phone.
- Has stayed on the US charts continuously for a full century, through several changes of fashion.
- Has real short forms already in use: Trin and Trini.
To consider
- The meaning is a specific Christian doctrine, not a general virtue. Some families want exactly that; others find it states more about belief than they intend, and it can read as pointed either way.
- It was heavily used in the years around and after The Matrix, so it currently reads to many ears as belonging to young adults rather than to babies — a phase most names pass through before settling.
- It is shared with a great many churches, colleges, streets and a Caribbean nation, which means plenty of harmless namesakes but few surprises when someone searches for it.
Veronica
Strengths
- It is at home in a dozen languages without changing its spelling.
- It carries three short forms that sound nothing alike.
- It is formal and familiar at the same time.
To consider
- The meaning has two accounts and the tidier one is the weaker.
- It will be shortened to Ronnie whether or not that is wanted.
- The spelling is recorded for both sexes, though nearly every bearer in the record is a girl.
