The story of Rolf
Rollo's grant at the mouth of the Seine, made by treaty in the early tenth century, converted a raiding force into a duchy; within a century and a half his descendant crossed to England and took it. The name stayed thoroughly Scandinavian and German while its bearer's line became French. In America it arrives with the Norwegian, Swedish and German migrations of the nineteenth century and belongs, in the record, to the same upper-Midwestern communities that carried Olaf and Rudolf — a compact, hard-edged name that has never been common here and has never quite disappeared.
