Lawernce
Masculine · “from Laurentum”
Lawernce moves two letters and invents a syllable. Lawrence has two — LOR-ence — and this spelling puts a vowel where there was a consonant cluster, so the letters describe a three-syllable name that nobody has ever said. It is one of the few respellings in the record that makes a name look longer than it is.

The story of Lawernce
There is a chemical element named after a Lawrence. Ernest Lawrence built the first cyclotron in the 1930s — a machine that accelerated particles in a spiral using a magnetic field, small enough at first to hold in one hand — and it made possible almost everything that followed in nuclear physics, including a great deal he did not intend. He won a Nobel prize, ran the laboratory at Berkeley that carries his name, and the element discovered there in the 1960s was called lawrencium after him. Only a handful of people have an element; fewer still have one and a laboratory.
Meaning
from Laurentum, and so of the laurel
The Roman name behind it comes from a town on the coast south of Rome whose own name was connected, at least by the Romans, to the laurel. What happened to the spelling here is a transposition: the e and the r have swapped places. Every letter of the standard spelling is present and one pair is out of order, which is the commonest kind of writing error there is and the hardest for a reader to catch.
