The story of Kelli
The Ó Ceallaigh families were among the most prominent in medieval Ireland, and emigration made Kelly one of the commonest Irish surnames in America. Irish surnames became American given names in large numbers in the twentieth century — Ryan, Casey, Riley, Kelly — usually for boys first and then decisively for girls. Kelly crossed in the 1950s, and the -i respelling followed in the 1960s, peaking at the end of that decade.

Not established
From the Irish surname Ó Ceallaigh, 'descendant of Ceallach'. The personal name Ceallach is disputed: 'bright-headed' and 'strife' have both been proposed, and a third reading connects it to a word for a church. None is settled, so the surname is well documented and the name behind it is not.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kelli went to 17 girls in 2025, but Kelly, Keely and Keli are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 407, which makes it the 585th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,961 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,949 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Kelli itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Lucile test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kelli's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lucile climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lucile's path sketches the road Kelli is walking now.
Kelli sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented medieval Irish family stands behind it, which is real history for a surname-name.
- Bright and quick, with no pronunciation risk in any English accent.
- It works for either sex, and did so for a generation before settling.
- Three spellings were in heavy use at once, so the written form is never assumable.
- The meaning of the Irish name behind the surname is genuinely unsettled.
