Where it comes from

The story of Keli

The transfer happened in stages. Kelly was among the most numerous Irish surnames, carried to America in enormous numbers in the nineteenth century, and it became a boys' given name in the ordinary surname-name way. Then it crossed: by the 1950s it was rising for girls, by the 1970s it was in the American top twenty for them and had almost vanished for boys. Grace Kelly, who married the prince of Monaco in 1956, is usually credited with a good deal of that, and the timing supports it. The result is a name that reads as a soft, unambiguously female American name and is in fact one of the great Irish patronymics, whose own meaning has never been settled.

Irish O Ceallaigh, from ceallach

Kelly is the anglicized Irish surname O Ceallaigh, from a personal name Ceallach whose meaning is disputed; bright-headed, strife and church-goer have all been proposed. Keli is a modern American spelling; the peak is 1979.

Keli sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 190 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keli went to 8 girls in 2025, but Kelly, Keely and Kelli are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 407, which makes it the 585th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,332 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,949 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Keli itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kel works as a short form for either sex.
  • Four letters, the shortest spelling of the name.
  • The Irish surname behind it is genuine and very widely borne.
What to consider
  • Kelly is the standard spelling by an enormous margin.
  • The -i ending dates this form to the 1970s.
  • The surname's own meaning is unsettled.
