The story of Lorene
American naming of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century made extensive use of a small set of endings — -ene, -ine, -etta, -ola — applied to stems that were already familiar. Lorene, Charlene, Arlene, Marlene and Darlene all belong to that pattern, and several of them peaked within a decade of each other. Lorene rose through the 1900s and peaked in the mid-1920s.

Not established
The stem is ambiguous. Through Laura or Lora, it is the Latin laurus, 'laurel' — the victor's wreath. Through Lorraine, it is the French region, named for Lothar, a Carolingian king, so 'Lothar's kingdom'. The -ene ending carries no meaning of its own; it is decoration in the way -ette and -ina are.

The Leola test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lorene's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leola climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leola's path sketches the road Lorene is walking now.
Lorene sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
