Where it comes from

The story of Bradie

The O Bradaigh were a Cavan family and the surname is among the most common in Ireland. Its move into American given names is normally dated to the 1970s and after, when surnames became the dominant source for new American girls' names. Bradie complicates that story: the row peaks in 1921, half a century early, which places it with the older habit of adding -ie or -y to almost any name to make an affectionate form, the same habit that produced Rollie, Sonnie and Ollie for men. The two mechanisms produce the same-looking name for entirely different reasons, and only the date tells them apart.

Meaningscholars disagree

descendant of Bradach, from a word of uncertain sense

The Irish surname O Bradaigh, anglicized as Brady, descends from a byname Bradach whose meaning is not securely recovered; readings including spirited and thieving have both been proposed. The -ie ending of this form is an English addition marking affection or, in the American practice, a girl's version of a surname, and it carries no meaning.
