Welsh adjectives have gender, and gwyn and gwen are the masculine and feminine of one word. That single fact explains why Welsh men's names end in -wyn and women's in -wen: Carwyn and Carwen, Alwyn and Gwendolen. Gwendalyn is that feminine form with an English suffix on the end.

Where it comes from

The story of Gwendalyn

Gwendolen appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's twelfth-century history as a queen of Britain, and again in Arthurian material, which is where nineteenth-century English writers found it; Tennyson and later Oscar Wilde put it firmly into English use. The Welsh original obeys a rule English does not have, since Welsh marks gender on adjectives and mutates initial consonants according to grammar, so gwyn becomes gwen for a woman and -wyn at the end of a compound. English borrowers took the finished word without the rule. Gwendalyn is an American respelling that swaps the Welsh ending for the -lyn suffix, and its best year on file is 1951.

Meaningscholars disagree

white or blessed, with a second element usually read as ring

Welsh gwen is the feminine of gwyn, whose senses run from white through fair to holy and blessed. The second element of Gwendolen is usually given as dolen, a ring or a link, though a personal name Dolen and other readings have been proposed. The -alyn ending of this modern spelling substitutes the English -lyn and carries no meaning.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuine Welsh name with a documented medieval literary life.
  • Gwen is a complete, short and long-established name of its own.
  • The gw- opening is distinctive and belongs to only a handful of names in English.
What to consider
  • Gwendolyn and Gwendolen are both far more common spellings.
  • The -alyn ending replaces the Welsh one with an American suffix.
  • It reads as a mid-century name in American ears.
