Where it comes from

The story of Lucile

Lucius was one of the oldest Roman given names, and its feminine Lucia was carried across Christian Europe by a Sicilian martyr whose cult reached as far as Sweden. French produced Lucile and Lucille from the diminutive Lucilla, and both spellings crossed to America in the nineteenth century. Lucile with one l was the earlier of the two in American records, peaking around 1908, before the double-l spelling overtook it.

Meaning

light

From the Latin lux, 'light', through the name Lucius. Roman practice connected the name to children born at daybreak, and the association held: Saint Lucia's feast falls near the winter solstice and is still marked in Scandinavia with candles, which is the same idea carried across fifteen centuries.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lucile went to 26 girls in 2025, but Lucille is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,340, which makes it the 249th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,738 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,199 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 61,818 for Lucile itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
