Where it comes from

The story of Karisma

The word traveled a long way in meaning. In Greek it was any freely given gift; in Paul's letters it named the gifts of prophecy, healing and tongues; in the twentieth century a sociologist writing about authority used it for the personal quality that lets someone command loyalty without an office, and from there it entered ordinary English. As a given name it is recent, and it was made visible in the nineteen-nineties by an Indian actress who carried the k spelling.

Meaning

a freely given gift; grace

Greek kharisma, a gift or favor, from kharis, grace or kindness. The New Testament uses it for spiritual gifts, and the modern sense of personal magnetism was introduced into English by twentieth-century sociology.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Karisma went to 26 girls in 2025, but Kharisma and Karizma are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 60, which makes it the 900th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,087 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 26,788 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 61,818 for Karisma itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is documented in Greek, in scripture and in modern sociology.
  • Kari works as a short form and is a complete name elsewhere.
  • Everyone can say it after hearing it once.
What to consider
  • Charisma is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected often.
  • It is a word in ordinary use, and one that describes a quality the child may or may not have.
  • Word-names of this kind are read as a claim, which some children carry easily and others do not.
