Karizma
Feminine · “Greek "a gift freely given”
Charisma had a career before it was a compliment. It was a Greek theological term for a gift of the Spirit, then in 1922 Max Weber borrowed it to describe a kind of political authority, and only after that did it drift into ordinary speech as a word for personal magnetism.

The story of Karizma
Weber's use is the hinge. Writing on the sources of political authority, he distinguished traditional, legal-rational and charismatic domination, taking the last term directly from its religious sense and applying it to leaders whose claim rests on personal quality rather than office or custom. The word entered English social science in translation, spread to journalism in the 1950s and 1960s, and by the 1970s meant simply appeal or magnetism, with the theology invisible. That is a documented three-stage career for a single word inside sixty years. As a given name Charisma and its respellings appear from the 1980s, and Karizma peaks in 2001.
Meaning
Greek "a gift freely given, a favor"
From Greek kharisma, a gift or favor, from kharis, grace — the same root as Eucharist, thanksgiving, and the Charites, the Graces of Greek myth. In the New Testament epistles kharismata are the gifts of the Spirit given to a congregation. Karizma is an American respelling with K for C and z for s; neither change affects the sound or the meaning.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
