Lucca is the name of a walled city in Tuscany, one that kept its Renaissance ramparts intact while its neighbors tore theirs down — and it is also the way some families spell Luca, the Italian form of Luke. The double c does real work in the mouth: it snaps the two halves apart and gives the k a clean edge before the open final ah.

From Loukas to Lucca
The story of Lucca
Greek Loukas gave Latin Lucas, the name of the gospel writer, and that name spread with Christianity into every language of Europe. Italian trimmed it to Luca, which has been in ordinary use on the peninsula for centuries and remains one of the standard boys' names there. Lucca is the older spelling of the Tuscan city — birthplace of the composer Puccini and a stop on the pilgrim road to Rome — and the two spellings have long shadowed each other. In the United States the doubled form arrived recently, carried along by the broad American enthusiasm for Italian names, and it has held a modest, level place ever since.

'from Lucania' through Luca and Lucas — or simply the Tuscan city of Lucca
As a spelling of the Italian given name Luca, it goes back through Latin Lucas to Greek Loukas, understood as 'man from Lucania', a region of southern Italy. The double-c spelling is instead the Tuscan place name, whose own root is not settled — pre-Roman, and read variously as marsh or sacred grove. A frequent popular link to Latin lux, 'light', is a resemblance rather than a descent.

Pronouncing Lucca
LOO-kah
Two syllables, stress on the first. In Italian the double c is a crisp k and the final vowel stays open; American speakers often soften the ending to LOO-kuh, which nobody will correct.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lucca went to 757 boys in 2025, but Luca and Luka are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 13,502, which makes it the 4th most-given boys’ name of the year — 421 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 127 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 2,256 for Lucca itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Alden test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lucca's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alden climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alden's path sketches the road Lucca is walking now.
Lucca sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, five letters, and it reads correctly on first sight for almost any English speaker.
- Travels without translation: Luca, Lucas, Luke and Loukas are all the same name in different languages.
- Ends in an open vowel, so it sits easily against consonant-first surnames.
- Strongly represented in California, Florida and Texas, so it is already familiar in much of the country without being commonplace anywhere.
- The single-c Luca is far more widespread, so expect a lifetime of gentle spelling corrections — and of forms coming back as Luca or Luka.
- Because the name is essentially unspaced from Luca in sound, no one will hear the difference you chose. The doubled c is a thing seen, not heard.
- This name's wave is very new, so a child called Lucca will likely be the only one in the class — and among adults, the name is still rare enough to prompt a question.
