Where each name comes from
Isaias
Yahweh is salvation
From Hebrew Yesha'yahu, joining the verb for saving with a short form of the divine name.
Yesha'yahu → Ēsaias → Isaias → Isaías → Isaiah
How it traveled
The name belongs first to the Hebrew prophet whose book stands among the longest in the Bible. When Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated those scriptures into Greek, Yesha'yahu became Ēsaias; Latin took it as Isaias, and that is the spelling Jerome used in the Vulgate and English Catholics used for centuries.
Lucca
'from Lucania' through Luca and Lucas — or simply the Tuscan city of Lucca
As a spelling of the Italian given name Luca, it goes back through Latin Lucas to Greek Loukas, understood as 'man from Lucania', a region of southern Italy. The double-c spelling is instead the Tuscan place name, whose own root is not settled — pre-Roman, and read variously as marsh or sacred grove. A frequent popular link to Latin lux, 'light', is a resemblance rather than a descent.
Loukas → Lucas → Luca → Lucca
How it traveled
Greek Loukas gave Latin Lucas, the name of the gospel writer, and that name spread with Christianity into every language of Europe. Italian trimmed it to Luca, which has been in ordinary use on the peninsula for centuries and remains one of the standard boys' names there.

Out loud, and in short
Isaias
ee-sah-EE-as
That is the Spanish and Portuguese pronunciation, four syllables with the stress on the third. English speakers who read it as a version of Isaiah tend to say eye-ZAY-us, and both are heard in the US.
- Isa — The usual informal shortening in Spanish-speaking families; also stands alone as a given name in several languages.
- Izzy — English-language short form, shared with Isaiah, Isabel and Isabella; casual rather than formal.
- Zay — Informal, used mostly by younger speakers in English; shared with Isaiah and Xavier.
- Chai — Occasional playground clipping of the middle syllables; strictly informal.
Lucca
LOO-kah
Two syllables, stress on the first. In Italian the double c is a crisp k and the final vowel stays open; American speakers often soften the ending to LOO-kuh, which nobody will correct.
- Luc — Informal clipping; also a standalone given name in French.
- Lu — Short, family-level form, used the same way for Lucas and Lucia.
- Luccy — Playful diminutive heard mostly at home and in the early years.

The trade-offs, name by name
Isaias
Strengths
- Works unchanged in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin, and is recognizable in English through its close cousin Isaiah.
- A documented written record stretching back to ancient translations of the Hebrew Bible — the spelling is old, not modern.
- Established short forms already in circulation: Isa, Izzy, Zay.
To consider
- Two live pronunciations compete in the US — the Spanish ee-sah-EE-as and the anglicized eye-ZAY-us. A child will spend some time correcting people, and may end up answering to both.
- The accent in Isaías tends to fall off in American paperwork, school rosters and email systems, which quietly nudges the pronunciation toward the English one.
- It sits close to Isaiah and to Isaí, and gets mistaken for both in writing. Worth deciding early which spelling goes on the birth certificate and holding to it.
Lucca
Strengths
- Two syllables, five letters, and it reads correctly on first sight for almost any English speaker.
- Travels without translation: Luca, Lucas, Luke and Loukas are all the same name in different languages.
- Ends in an open vowel, so it sits easily against consonant-first surnames.
To consider
- The single-c Luca is far more widespread, so expect a lifetime of gentle spelling corrections — and of forms coming back as Luca or Luka.
- Because the name is essentially unspaced from Luca in sound, no one will hear the difference you chose. The doubled c is a thing seen, not heard.
- This name's wave is very new, so a child called Lucca will likely be the only one in the class — and among adults, the name is still rare enough to prompt a question.
